Bates College, Chase Hall Revitalization
A $14 million renovation of historic Chase Hall to create a Center for Student Services revitalizes the building for the next 100 years. The original 1918 building had seven additions with multiple levels creating challenging wayfinding and accessibility issues. The renovation untangled building circulation while renewing buildings systems. Student services previously scattered in multiple locations were brought together with gathering space for students to offer a single address for student life services on campus. New exterior entrances offer accessible pathways and outdoor places for students to engage with each other. A former loading dock is now a patio with outdoor seating. Interior space reveals the history of building additions as part of the esthetic experience of new and existing spaces.
